As I read your sharing, I have one thought in my mind:
I understand parents want their children to be "top of the cream", so they plan every lessons for them in the name of "for the good of the future."
However, is adult afraid of their children cannot be the best or they project the competitive spirit to the poor souls which they are in the stage of learning through playing, interaction, discovering and suprising by other things? Are we "in the name of competitive opportunity' murder the beauty of the childhood life? Are we adultize the children in order heal the inner wounded children within the adult's heart? I do not have an answer, but I do know one thing:
Learning should be redemptive, not oppressive. If a soul who are oppressed by the so called "summer learning activities", how do they experience the joy of discovery and loving community in learning?
My wife used to say: "HK educational system kills the spirit of children." I agree...how learning becomes redemptive? (i.e., how learning really help students to experience the knowledge and the joy of learning and the mission of discovery truth?) It is a question I leave it to you :)
