State of Florida Calls on Lutherans to Serve, Welcome People From Haiti

The State of Florida has enlisted the help of Lutherans to receive Haitians with U.S. passports and accompany injured Haitians entering the United States from earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The State of Florida activated a repatriation plan to return Haitian Americans to the United States following the Jan. 12 earthquake. "Humanitarian parolees" -- Haitian nationals who sustained severe injuries from the earthquake -- are also coming to the United States for medical treatment. Florida's Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) asked Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) and Lutheran Services Florida (LSF), Tampa, to gather Creole-speaking volunteers to help with translation services needed at Florida airports and hospitals.
Danielle Kearney, LDR coordinator for Florida, is overseeing the repatriation work at the Sanford International Airport near Orlando. "The repatriation process at the airport started Jan. 19," she said....
