Chancellor Angela Merkel called the sex abuse scandal rocking the homeland of Pope Benedict XVI a major challenge to German society and warned the only way to come to terms with it was to "find out everything that has happened."

Merkel's comments to parliament on Wednesday came amid growing impatience from Germany's Roman Catholics for the pontiff to address the scandal in his homeland, where some 300 former Catholic students have come forward with claims of physical or sexual abuse....

Pope Benedict XVI's former diocese is facing new allegations of physical and sexual abuse on a daily basis, the head of its new sex-abuse task force said Friday.

"It is like a tsunami," Elke Huemmeler, who leads the diocese's newly founded abuse prevention task force, told The Associated Press.

Huemmeler estimates there are about 120 cases on the record to date, around 100 of them at the nearby Ettal monastery boarding school, run by Benedictine monks. She stresses, however, her role is not to deal with the old cases, but help set up the prevention program....

Danish child rights group wants review of church secrecy laws
http://wwrn.org/articles/32903/

A Danish children's rights group Thursday called for a review of the country's church secrecy rules so as to ensure that alleged cases of child abuse are investigated. Bishops in Denmark's small Catholic Church, which numbers some 35,000 people, as well as the Lutheran Church, have both cited professional secrecy rules as a reason for not reporting allegations heard by priests when offering counselling.

But Lisbeth Zornig Andersen, head of the National Council for Children, a government-funded agency, told broadcaster DR it was necessary to review such secrecy clauses. Zornig Andersen noted that the medical profession has exceptions in place when it comes to suspect cases of child abuse....

The pope says he’s truly sorry over the sexual abuses cases in Ireland and has rebuked Irish bishops for their lack of leadership in dealing with the crimes. The pope has delivered an unprecedented pastoral letter to the Catholic Irish Church. Never before had a pope written a document to address a similar situation.

In the letter, Benedict XVI said he feels betrayed after bishops ignored victims rights and failed to apply Canon Law.

Brazilian authorities are investigating three priests accused of sexually abusing altar boys after a video allegedly showing one case of abuse was broadcast on television, police and church officials said Tuesday.

The case came to light after the SBT network aired a video purportedly showing an 82-year-old priest having sex with a 19-year-old altar boy who worked for him for four years. Other young men appeared on the report saying that they, too, had been abused by Monsignor Luiz Marques Barbosa.

Also under investigation are Monsignor Raimundo Gomes, 52, and Father Edilson Duarte, 43, for allegedly having sexual relations with boys and young men....
