Thanks for choosing this book, which I enjoyed reading it very much. I can only find the English edition in the US. This work is a critique of the contemporary cultural policies in New Labor Britain and Bush's America. Frank Furedi blames the McDonaldization of higher education and the rise of mass culture for the disappearance of public intellectuals.

Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s definition of intellectual, Frank Furedi discusses the importance of agency among intellectuals. But I think that Furedi's critique would have been more convincing if he had borrowed the insights of Gramsci, especially the concept of hegemony.

Gramsci argues that intellectuals, broadly defined, often serve as “organizers and mediators of consent” as well as “agents of class in power.” They transmit ideas within civil society and between society and state. In other words, any group seeking to gain power needs to win the allegiance of intellectuals. Therefore intellectuals are not passive victims of globalization, commoditization, and conformism. Instead they actively participate in helping the ruling elite to institutionalize anti-intellectual policies as we can see in Blair's Britain.

Where have all the intellectuals gone? My answer is that the intellectuals have not completely disappeared. They are temporarily marginalized in the public domain in Britain and the U.S..

Gramsci’s advice to the Italian Communist Party may still be relevant to intellectuals worldwide at the beginning of the 21st century. To counter this trend of anti-intellectualism in politics and society, it is important for intellectuals to adopt a position strategy, which consists of getting into the establishment, building alliances with people from all walks of life, isolating the ruling power, and re-intellectualizing the society from below.

I would like to learn from friends in Mainland China, Taiwan, and HK and see how they apply Frank Furedi's insights to examine their own societies.
